Swans can still find September

,man city club
Swans can still find September
RYAN O’KEEFE has not given up on finals footy saying the Sydney Swans will fight on after their 35-point loss to Essendon on Saturday at the SCG.

The Swans have a proud record in September, making the last six finals series since 2003 but a seventh appearance now seems unlikely, particularly as the Bloods play the Saints and Cats over the remainder of the season.

But the in-form O’Keefe is not throwing in the towel just yet.

“That was an eight point game so we’re not making it easy on ourselves that’s for sure,,” O’Keefe said after the loss to the Bombers.

“We’ve just got to make sure we keep winning … but we’ve some tough games ahead.”

The Swans are on six wins and nine losses with 24 points. They are two wins out of the eight in tenth spot on the ladder. Many will already be writing them off as a finals force but O’Keefe is having none of that.

“We’re still a definite chance. We’re not ruling it out at all.

“That’s part of our team,, we just don’t give up. We’re going for the finals until we can’t make it.”

O’Keefe described Essendon as a side on the up with a lot of pace who were able to hurt the Swans where it counted.

O’Keefe, 28, was outstanding with 27 possessions and one goal against Essendon, backing up his performance against North with 37 disposals and one goal last week on the SCG.

“Essendon are a really good side. Against sides like that,, you just can’t turn the ball over. It was disappointing. Our form’s been pretty good over the last few weeks.

“It looked like we really ran out of legs but we’ve still got a good core of players and some young guys coming through.

“If we can start to get some young guys to play some good footy and step up fill those voids,t shirt rock, there should be some positive signs.”

Zac’s star is rising

,
Zac’s star is rising
IT ALMOST seems a pre-requisite that modern-day draftees have a basketball history.

The phrase ‘basketball background’ appears in draft biographies almost as often as ‘hard-running’ midfielder or ‘strong-marking key forward.’

Fremantle’s Zac Clarke is the latest emerging star to step off the court and on to the footy field and admits he is still learning the game after coming to it relatively late.

“I did Auskick when I was a little tacker then focused on basketball most of the way through my childhood. I only picked it up when I was 15 again, just playing in the local junior footy team. I played a year or two then I went to Oakleigh under-18s,” Clarke said.

“To be honest I never took it overly seriously. It was just a bit of fun. Even in that year at Oakleigh I was working full-time and saw it as something I enjoyed doing on the weekend.”

Clarke says there are plenty of parallels between the two sports which might explain the trend of players crossing over.

“There have been a few coming through recently. I think there’s a lot of in-close work with quick reflexes and fast hand-eye co-ordination,everton training,” he said.

“I think it’s pretty easily transferrable.”

His football career has gone from strength to strength and has been capped with a round 20 nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star.

2011 is Clarke’s third year with Fremantle and by far his most productive. After managing just eight games in his first two seasons,, he has played nine so far this year.

His increased game time has come partially because of his own development and also Fremantle’s circumstances, shirt barcelona 2011, which were thrown into disarray when Aaron Sandilands injured his toe.

Clarke says the All Australian ruckman has been one of his closest mentors as he fills his breach.

“It’s a big loss not having him out there but at the same time it’s been a good opportunity for me to improve my game and play some regular AFL football. It has been helpful,,” he said.

“We’ve got Spider Burton here as well and he’s been really good. He is probably our main ruck coach. While Aaron’s been out he’s always up for giving me a few tips or going through tapes.”

VFL Cats clobber Coburg
VFL: Cats clobber Coburg
Geelong has made a statement to the league that they a force to be reckoned with a gutsy 12.17.89 to 10.12.72 win against a star studded Coburg Tigers featuring the likes of Bowden,, Brown, Raines and Polak to name a few. Geelong also unveiled three more debutants including AFL listed player Steven Motlop.

Geelong with the aid of a handy breeze got off to a good start kicking four goals to two in the first quarter to take a 14 point lead into quarter. Joel Bowden was trying to roughen up the young Geelong players but Ben Johnson wasnt having any of it showing Bowden that the young Cats are here to play. Geelongs tackling pressure was fantastic in the first quarter having 11 more than their opponents. Motlop and Varcoe demonstrated this to great effect putting pressure on Coburg when they were trying to break away out of defence. Podsiadly collected eight touches and was well supported by Raidme and Donohue who collected seven touches each for the quarter. Podsiadly and Moles both kicked two each for the quarter.

The second quarter was a complete opposite to the first as the tigers kicked three goals to nil in the term to be leading by five points at the main break. Geelong just couldnt get it in their forward 50 losing that stat 17-8. The backline worked tirelessly and this showed in the leading possession getters for the quarter with Donohue collecting 12 possessions for the corner and Firman and Laidler collecting nine each for the quarter.

Geelong took full advantage of the wind in the third quarter kicking five goals to two for the quarter to open up a 14 point leading at three quarter time. Moles ran hard for the quarter collecting nine touches whilst Donohue collected eight touches for the quarter.

Geelong needed to lift their intensity and pressure as they knew Coburg were kicking with a strong breeze and they didnt let their supporters or coaching staff down as they piled on the first three goals of the quarter with Motlop kicking his first goal in Geelong colours with a checkside from directly in front on the run showing some exciting skills that will have the fans wanting to see more of him in the future. Although Coburg kicked the last three goals it wasnt enough as Geelong held on for a gutsy 17 point win to make it four wins in a row. Podsiadly had 10 touches for the quarter and was well supported by Donohue, Blake and Tutangi who all had seven touches for the quarter.

Podsiadly kicked four goals for the Cats whilst Moles kicked two in the first quarter. Better players for Geelong were Podsiadly who had 28 touches and kicked four goals, red shirt football, Donohue who collected 34 touches and 19 hand ball receives, Blake who had 21 touches and 32 hit outs and Tutangi who had 19 touches, eight clearances and nine tackles. Other notable performers where Raidme with 26 touches and Moles 25 touches and two goals.

After last weeks game Amos said this game was a test to see how far they have come and this is what he had to say.

“I feel like the group has developed a fair bit and Im looking forward to seeing if they continue to play this way. Weve had a good contribution from our VFL players,, they are really important for us,, we had quite a few in today. It was a really important win for us today and they played really well I was proud of the way went about it.”

The team morale for the Cats is really high and the self belief amongst the team is really good. Talking to Donohue after the game this is what he had to say about the good feeling in the side and his form over the last month.

“Coming into this game we know it was a massive game,t shirt manche longue, we all knew it was an eight point game, to get that wine specially where we were at three quarter time two goals up going into a stiff breeze it was a great win and the feeling amongst the group is really good.

The key to my footy is that I just go to the game and feel comfortable as a leader and that gives me confidence which I have used the last two games and my confidence is sky high at the moment which is real good.”

Blues leadership race wide open

,
Blues leadership race wide open
HE MAY have led the Eagles to a Premiership, but Chris Judd is no shoo-in as Carlton captain.

Blues players were yesterday given the chance to vote for their club’s leadership group. The 2008 captain will be chosen from that group, the Herald Sun reports.

Last year’s deputy Nick Stevens, Kade Simpson, Judd and at least three others will be in the running to replace axed skipper Lance Whitnall.

Coach Brett Ratten yesterday gave his players criteria for the leadership group and asked them to vote for those of their peers they thought were best suited to the roles on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis.

“We’ve put everyone’s name up for them to vote on our leadership group and from that group we’ll ultimately determine our captain,” Ratten said after a training session in sweltering heat at Princes Park yesterday.

“We’re going to have a six to eight-man leadership group and I want every one of those men to put his case [for being captain] forward right to the end.”

The leadership group will be announced after the Blues return from a 17-day camp in South Africa next month, arsenal shop, where the performances of all captaincy contenders will be monitored.

Carlton’s match committee will choose the captain from the leadership group.

“The South Africa component will play a big part who eventually becomes captain, worn by shirts,” Ratten said.

“There are a lot of activities, there’s a lot of bonding and some workshops as well. The biggest thing is to see who really stands up and delivers over there.”

Carlton will play a pre-season match against Fremantle on February 2 in Pretoria.

Ratten said several players were worthy candidates to lead the team.

“The biggest thing we saw last year was the growth of Kade Simpson,,” he said.

“If Whitnall had played, would we have seen a kid of 22 turning 23 grow and develop and really embrace that leadership like he did?

“He now believes he is a leader of our club.

“We are going to run some workshops and have 360-degree feedback while we’re there. It’s pretty important for us to determine the criteria and the values of our leadership group and our club,, but I think that trip will take us a big step forward in that area.

“We know Nick Stevens was already a leader of this club last year as vice-captain, Chris Judd is already a premiership captain and then you’ve got other people around who have grown along the way. Brad Fisher played more games and you’ve got Jarrad Waite and Brendan Fevola.”

Another Gardiner selection dilemma

,
Another Gardiner selection dilemma
Star ruckman Michael Gardiner is again available for selection and now the West Coast selection committee has to decide if there’s a place for him in the side.

Three weeks ago, Gardiner was returning from a knee injury, and this week it’s from suspension, but the dilemma remains the same as it was when he recovered from his knee injury a few weeks back- does he go straight into the team, or does he return via Claremont?

The 26-year-old was set to play WAFL last time before the late withdrawal of Ashley Hansen meant AFL duties instead, but he’s now missed another couple of weeks of football.

Coach John Worsfold was his usual non-committal self when quizzed about the dilemma at his regular Wednesday media conference.

“We pick the side on merit every week, and we did that last time. He came in as a late replacement for Ash Hansen, so he wasn’t first picked,, so we haven’t always brought him straight back in.

“It’s exactly the same principle this week – he may come straight back in, he may not, depending on what the side needs.

“For him to come in, someone has to miss out. It’s just the normal process of picking the best side to take them on this week,, so we’ll go through who we think’s the best personnel for this week’s game.

“I was very happy with the way the team performed on the weekend, calcio roma, so we’re not forced to make any changes this week, galaxy clothing, and if we do, then that means we believe we’ll be stronger this week.”

Worsfold said Hansen is still at least a week away.
